Job Description:

• Report on the intersection of technology and consumer culture
• Cover e-commerce and retail, the influencer economy, marketing, travel, and related topics
• Investigate companies and platforms shaping online shopping
• Analyze trendy products and status symbols
• Explore the logistics of how products reach consumers
• Generate original story ideas for a general audience
• Move quickly on breaking stories and conduct in-depth reporting when appropriate
• Write clearly and stylishly on deadline
• Produce engaging magazine journalism across a wide-ranging beat

Requirements:

• Substantial experience as a reporter for general-interest publications
• Deep interest in consumerism and ability to translate compelling ideas into deftly reported and beautifully written stories
• High standards for quality and accuracy
• Facility with the ethics and rigors of journalism
• Deep familiarity with The Atlantic
• Great eye for spotting trends and healthy skepticism about trends
• Ability to work quickly, meet deadlines, and switch gears as needed
• Interest in and openness to a wide variety of views and perspectives
• Desire to write frequently, with authority and humor
• Willingness to work night, early-morning, and weekend hours as needed
• Successful completion of reference checks
• Compliance with The Atlantic's COVID-19 vaccination policy and submission of proof of vaccination status
