Who we are

Winner of the Best Place to Work at the Tech South West Awards 2025, City College Plymouth offers a culture the College is proud of. Our core values of Respect, Ownership and Integrity help create an environment that supports a passion for teaching and learning. These values guide our work as we enrich our community through knowledge, experience and skills so every student can achieve their best.

As one of the country’s largest providers of quality education and training, City College Plymouth is entering a period of transition to enable us to propel education into the future. We take pride in offering a learning environment and organisational culture that contribute positively to the health, wellbeing and sustainability of our community and enable all our students and staff to achieve their full potential.

The Role

We are looking for a qualified and experienced Bricklayer to join our Construction team as a Bricklaying Lecturer. You will bring current trade knowledge and practical experience into the workshop and classroom, helping learners develop the skills, knowledge and professional behaviours they need to progress into the construction industry.

You will plan and deliver practical and theory sessions, assess learner progress, provide clear feedback and maintain high standards of health and safety. You will also support attendance, progress and behaviour, contribute to curriculum development and work with colleagues and employers to ensure our provision remains relevant to industry.

A recognised Level 3 bricklaying trade qualification, or equivalent occupational competence, and substantial recent industry experience are essential. A teaching qualification is desirable rather than essential, so this is also an opportunity for an experienced tradesperson who wants to bring their skills into education. Experience of teaching, training or assessing apprentices or learners would also be an advantage.

What Will You Bring to the Role

  • Adapting -You can adapt confidently to changing situations, balancing practical teaching, assessment, learner support and the day-to-day demands of a busy construction area.
  • Collaborating - You work well with others and can build positive relationships with learners, colleagues and employers, while maintaining clear professional expectations.

  • Focused - You remain focused and attentive in practical environments, making appropriate decisions and keeping health, safety and quality at the centre of your work.
  • Problem Solving - You are a practical problem-solver who can use your industry knowledge to find solutions, explain technical skills clearly and help learners overcome challenges.

Benefits

City College Plymouth will offer you;

  • 50 days Holiday entitlement inclusive of bank holidays and College closure over Christmas.
  • Career development opportunities.
  • Generous contributions towards your pension.
  • Free tea, coffee and lunch in our dedicated staff lounge.

How we recruit

We aim to recruit based on potential, not just experience. We are interested in seeing your behaviours in action and how they will help you become successful at City College Plymouth, giving everyone the opportunity to show their potential, regardless of background or experience.

After completing our online application form, you will be asked to complete an online assessment within a few days of this vacancy closing. This assessment asks you no questions at all. Instead, it observes your behaviour and natural strengths in action, with a series of engaging, intuitive tasks. You will receive a report outlining your behaviours once you have completed the assessment, regardless of whether you progress to the next stage or not, providing you with some feedback.

The College welcomes applications from service leavers and the Armed Forces community, and supports those service leavers who are Reservists in any of the Armed Forces.

The College reserves the right to close this advertisement early if sufficient applications have been received.
